Roman cursus honorum
Roman cursus honorum

The Magistrates are in charge of provinces while the Senate conferred those places when the person retires from office. The important provinces that had a large military force was ruled by the ex-consuls, while other provinces where ruled by the ex-praetors. During the Roman Empire, most offices stayed in place but would change functions over time. An Example of this would be the emperors position. The emperors position was an advancement in rack proceeded by orderly stages and was laid down by other emperors than having competitive electioneering. The cursus honorun is the change of ladder of power to the next ladder of power. It's primarily goal is to change the social status and ranking and to make it higher and was reserved for every man that came to power. The women, however, could not have this because they where either a wive, a mother, or a daughter to the emperor. If they weren't, they would have the last name of their husband.

The Principle of Sturcture was evolved under the "order of conflict". In this principle is the system of check and balance that dealt with the collegiality and a limited amount of time that a person could serve in the political office. It was also suppose to be a participatory democracy, but it turn out to be a oligarchic representative government. The offices that made up the Magistrates are the consuls and the dictator that were in charge and dealt with the adminstitive and legislative problems while the praetors where in charge of the courts. The next office was the Censors that took a census of the population and properties for taxes while the sediles supervised public games, public places, and brought in supplies for the city, town, and/or village. The next office was the tribunes. Their job was to protect other plebeians from actions from the higher powers and veto any bills passed through the Senate. The last office was the quaestors and they were the state treasuries that could also serve various functions in the provinces.

The Senate is made up of 600 magistrates/ex-magistrates that would usually meet at the Curia. They are suppose to be the cheif government body. The reason for that is that they assign military commands and provinces, debate/pass bills/ amd control public finanices and forgin affairs. The Assemblies, on the other hand, are made up of male citizens that attend in order to vote on matters but they can't have a debate about the matters at hand, all they can do is vote on it. The three types of assemblies that they had were the Assembly of the Curiae, the Assembly of the Centuries, and the Assembly of the Tribes.
